Have new fitness goals for yourself? It can feel exciting yet overwhelming to start working towards your goals. Bettering your habits and health are huge life changes that don’t happen overnight. No matter how much weight you want to lose or how many miles you want to run, here are 11 tips to stick with your fitness goals!
WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS
It’s easy to tell yourself you want to exercise more and it’s even easier to tell yourself you’ll start tomorrow or forget completely in the midst of your busy life. Writing down your fitness goals is a great way to start visualizing it, not to mention you can’t forget it if you write it down!
MAKE A GAME PLAN
So, you have a goal, but how will you achieve it? Strategizing your steps will help create a map towards your end result! Some goals may seem too big or unattainable, but building a blueprint can give you guidance when you don’t know how you’ll get from your starting point to the finish line.
TAKE IT ONE STEP AT A TIME
Stepping into a new lifestyle can feel overwhelming or discouraging when new habits aren’t sticking. Focusing on one new change at a time can break down your end goal into more attainable, smaller goals. If you’re end goal is to do 50 pull-ups, start by hanging on the pull-up bar as long as you can. It’s important to take your time in achieving your goals.
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
Reaching your goal is rewarding, but the journey in between is something to be proud of too! As you work your way to the finish line, track your progress and remind yourself of your strength and determination. Looking back at the number of days you went to the gym or how many miles you’ve ran can be great inspiration when you’re feeling discouraged or unmotivated.
Life happens and schedules get busy, holding onto your reasons and inspiration can keep you focused and working towards your goals. Whether it’s creating a dream board to look at every day, following fitness accounts on social media or writing down your reasons every day, try to keep inspiration around you as much as possible.
FIND A BUDDY
Don’t do it alone! Having a friend join you can make the journey more enjoyable, plus you’ll have someone to hold you accountable. A buddy can also take the form of a personal trainer, a fitness class, or an online discussion group centered around your goal.
When you’ve made some strong progress, take time to treat yourself! Spoil yourself with something that won’t undo all the progress you’ve made. Treat yourself to a new outfit, a massage, or new workout equipment!
PRIORITIZE YOUR WELLNESS
Don’t over exhaust or deprive yourself when you’re working towards your goal. Taking care of your body and mind is crucial to staying healthy and achieving any fitness goal. When you’re feeling under the weather, don’t force yourself to go to the gym. Take your vitamins and get a good night’s rest as much as possible. Most importantly, listen to your body.
LET YOURSELF REST
Just like spoiling yourself after making good progress, take time to rest. Make time in your schedule to focus on rejuvenating your body. Run a bath, go to sleep early, or rejuvenate on an acupressure mat. However you rest and relax, find time to do it.
Know yourself and your habits to set rational goals and reasonable game plans. If you’re not a morning person no matter how hard you try to be, don’t schedule your workouts at 6 A.M. Don’t purge your pantry of all sugar and carbs if you aren’t prepared for a completely new diet.
The journey to your end goal is never a linear path. There will be days you break your diet or skip the gym. It’s only human so don’t beat yourself up about it. Instead, reflect on why you might have slipped up and make adjustments accordingly to stay on track. Most importantly, stay positive!
